I got a dozen of these magnets off Ebay for like $20. Have big rare earth magnets from old style hard drives. Took a piece of aluminum and drilled a countersunk hole to bolt on a brass knob from the hardware store. Then drilled out the holes in the magnets back plate to a bit larger and drilled matching holes in the aluminum and bolted it on. I have to work at prying even D2 which is 12% chrome off this bad boy.

Take one and screw it to the front of your drill press. When you finish with your chuck key, just toss it in the general direction of the magnet and it will hold it until you need it again. I have one on my drill press on one on my mill.

Those are huge! they must be out of the really old 5 1/4" drives. I use the heck out of them. I have two glued to the sides of my cordless drill and I just stick the drill to the side of the tool cabinet and it sticks there. Also great for holding everything from screwdrivers to hammers or files on the side of the cabinet.

Oh, I see, they aren't that big, it's the backing plate. If you are interested, the magnets are glued to the plate. If you put the end of the plate in a vice and bend the plate, the magnets will pop right off without being damaged. THEN you could glue them to your drill. . . .

Ya and about every steel cutting in the area will find it too.

I use one inside a plastic bag to go around and pick up metal cuttings, then I turn the bag inside out pull it off the magnet and then dump the inside out bag.

I kind of like the backing plate. It gives me a purchase to pull them off stuff. You really head to get a grip to pull them off anything. I had some before with no backing plates and they broke themselves slamming onto stuff.

If you consider putting a couple on the base of the drill press, put a piece of cardstock over them. Then it will catch all the filings and lifting up the cardstock will remove them for easy cleaning. I like the bag idea, though.

Now that is a great idea. Gonna have to do that.

Improved model. Took the magnet loose and then machined a inset in a piec of 1/2 aluminum. Countersunk the handle screw slapped some JB weld on it and will JB weld the magnet in the fitted hole.

I was trying out my new light box and added this. Still haven't got it to show the hamon that well. Need better lights than I can get here.

Very interesting. Could I recommend a thin coat of epoxy around the bottom, or even dip it in Plasti-dip. This would keep metal dust out of the magnet area as well as scratching less. Put a piece of masking tape over it to prevent scratching as well. I like the aluminum box with handle idea. Very nice and clean.

You consider making and selling these? I would take a couple at the right price.

should just but a baggy around the thing. rubber band it around the base of the handle then when it gets to many filings on it just undo the band and turn the baggy inside out and dump.

Yes, the baggie might be the best solution. I just realized that I could put some in the path of the sparks from the grinder to collect them. I don't have any way to machine the aluminum, but I really like the design. I suppose I could make a small mold and use epoxy or polyester resin.

ib2v4u: I see from a different thread that the baggy melted. When I tried the baggy, it tore holes in it trying to pull it off. Try the cardstock(#110 poster board), it won't scratch anything under 400 grit and won't burn till 450 degrees. See, I told you people would buy them if you decided to sell them.

If you need more magnets, I've got about 10 hard drives to take apart. I could ship the magnets to you.
