what kind of magnets do you guys use to hold your blades when working them? is there a particular kind that works better than others or are you just using a big a## magnet?....thanks willy:D

I buy them at harbor freight when on sale. The big double magnet with the metal bars running between them is the best. Just unscrew the bars and you have two strong magnets. Grind the metal lip down on one side of the magnet and you now have a lip (on the side you didn't grind) to hold the blade more securely ( set the spine against the lip).
I also set about six magnets around my grinder when in use to catch the stray steel filings. It makes bench cleanup easier ( not that I really clean it much).

Here is the link to the magnets I like at HF

Guys put your clean up magnets in baggies. I use them to clean up around the shop and stick them in a plastic bag, then when I have a load I just turn the bag inside out and pull the magnet away and dunp the bag. Trying to get all the little piece of steel off the magnet is a pain otherwise

I use a 2x6 with two holes drilled into it to hold two rare earth magnets. The magnets are 97lbs of pulling force each and are located about 1/2" from the side where the knife is held. The board keeps the magnets from getting covered in metal and provides a large handle to control the grind.

what are earth magnets? i have one of the 100lbs pull mag. from h.f. i have used it to grind and it works pretty ok i was just wondering if there was another type i was missing.i use those refridgerator magnets that are thin and pretty big like the calander ones from state farm ins. for around my grinder to help with cleanup. when i go to clean them i lay em on a board or something non-mag. and scrape them off with a paintstick. i have quite a pile of filings. has anybody a use for them? i just have problems throwing away anything i might be able to use!! i guess im an incurable packrat about somethings or mabey a bit ocd! oh well!....thanks,willy

Can someone post a picture of how a magnet is used? Are they ment just to catch metal filings or more?

How about doing a canister "weld" of metal filings!?! You could probably end up with something really wierd!

I can negate the whole magnet thing with a little bit of MuMetal !!!

Placing the magnet on the flat of the the blade and grinding the opposite flat. Helps you flatten the metal or doing tapered tangs.

I still haven't figured out how ya'll do it. Everytime I do it I round off around the edges too much and there are gaps if I were to glue up handle material. I've tried moving it around, i've tried all my speeds and tried all different kinds of belts still manages to round off a part so that I can't use the blade.

I use a non-variable speed Grizz and haven't had an issue. You just have to make sure it's secured with the magnet and keep it flat on the platen. Press on and remove with quick, straight movements. If you try to go slow, it will bevel and round. I ruined one before I got the hang of it.
