Magnetism after heat treating

I recently received some S35VN blanks back from heat treat and the are magnetic. I mean they will stick to other metallic objects. Is this normal or what happened?

Whack the spine on a wood bench. That will knock the magnetism out of them.

I happens all the time during the grinding process, especially if you ever used a welder's magnet or something similar to hold the blade.

Get a cheap de-magnetizer from Enco. I use one whenever I finish grinding a blade to get rid of any magnetism.

This is exactly what I have and it works like a charm. Demagnetizes in just a couple seconds.

I am at a complete loss to understand how that would have any effect at all. Please explain.

The shock will knock the magnetic dipoles out of alignment and eliminate the steel's magnetic properties.

Or it is magic.... either answer works :)

Whacking a piece of slightly magnetized metal hard can make it slightly less magnetic, but a demagnetizer makes it totally non-magnetic.

No, you can demagnetize an actual magnet permanently by striking it repeatedly on a hard surface. I have actually done it many times over the years. A few whacks of the spine of a knife on a wood bench will demagnetize it it permanently

It's science and only a Google away.

I do it when a blade or tool gets magnetic and I don't have time to go to the de-magnetizer. It works, but the piece seems to re-magnetize fairly easy. I also worry about damaging the blade when whacking it hard post-HT.

This guy was trying to de-magnetize a sword....

Omwow. That is one high quality sword. Every time I tap a drill bit I fully expect it to snap like that.. so far I've been lucky but I don't recommend doing it (as an addendum). I HAVE had one shatter from putting too much pressure on it during drilling and it bent slightly.. always wear goggles and preferably a leather apron! Scary as crap. Safety can never be emphasized enough in this hobby.
