magnetizing a metal dowel/pivot pin...??

How would I go about magnetizing a steel dowel pin...? what type of metal is best...??

Real simple, face North and whack the end of it. Or just do all of your finishing facing North like I do. It's actually a significant PITA when your working though, I always have a bear of a time getting all of the shavings off.
