I got a couple of them today. There thin and STRONG

Anyway my question is: The metal plate there
mounted on has NOT become magnetic,Which makes me wonder what kind of metal it is ?
The guy at he store said he thought it was nickel. If it is it would seem to me a good way to get free nickel for bolsters, gaurds, etc.

Does anyone know the answer ?

Thanks,FOG

its probably stainless. some that i have were. be careful, thoes magnets will draw blood if you get pinched by them sticking together. they are also very brittle and break easily.

i have some of those out of a large computer from the stone age, very big and powerful. and yea the will draw blood... :( they are very handy, i use them wrapped in a little duct tape to deaden the ring of my anvil, hold hot cut plates over the face of my anvil, grind small parts, pick up lost tools in engine compartments... etc. did you find them at a computer repair place? i would like to scrounge a few more... i want to try dredging for steel things in the river... find some murder weapons and stuff ha...

I got them at a local computer repair store. For FREE from some junk drives they had. He even took the drives apart an gave me the magnets an the lil plate they mount on
Yes they are very STRONG, yet thin an small

Yes they are attracted to the plate they mount on BUT, if you put metal to the opposite side of the plate that the magnet is on you feel NO pull.Put it close to the Magnet side an it will grab it out of your hand

Most of the ones that come from recent hard drives are neodymium, or rare earth, magnets. Very strong, and the larger ones are even somewhat dangerous (pinched skin, etc.)

Yep thats why i got them,to hold blades.
When he said he thought the mount plate was nickel i started thinking about bolsters an such.

If you use them for grinding magnets, make sure that it doesn't stick the blade to the steel platen. Gee, I wonder how I learned about that?
