I used to do pistolsmithing work and bought a 10X jeweler's loupe to see detail on hammer hooks and sears when stoning them in a jig while doing trigger jobs. You must have a very strong light to see what's going on. For sharpening a loupe is a tool you will rarely need but once in a while you'll get a blade that just won't seen to sharpen easily and normally and the loupe will let you see easily what is actually going on and correct it. I also use mine to examine stylus wear on my phono cartridges (yes I still play records - no digital music allowed in my house). You can find them all over the Internet from jeweler's supply dealers. You need one.
