Hold the char between your thumb and the flint. Keep the flint at a slight angle up and strike downward with a glancing blow. The faster and lighter you graze it the better the sparks IMO. You shouldn't be taking flakes off the flint with your striking...

Once your char is lit, transfer it to the center of the jute "pad". Fold the jute over and pinch it between your fingers...

Hold the package upward and away from the wind so you don't catch any smoke in your face. Now you can blow it to flame. Use a focused stream of air starting lightly and increasing in force. You should practice to get it to flame in one long breath...
