Mags or no Mags

Hello everyone,

I am stongly considering trying to purchase my first Busse knife, an ASH 1 while they are still available. I have never had the pleasure of holding or even seeing a Busse, besides pics on the forums. I am trying to decide if I should go for the magnum handles or not. I know you guys are experts when it comes to busse knives so I bring my question to you.

I would say that I have medium sized hands. I am not sure that I need handles as thick as the mags, but I would definately go that route if they have an advantage. Would the mags offer any advantages with medium sized hands? If they would be more comfortable during use than I will probably get them. If not, I like the look of the regular handles very much as well. So what do you guys think. I am not concerned with looks as much as usability.

What are your opinions on this. Should I go with regular handles or magnums. If you have a preference, please explain why so I can weigh my options.

Thanks in advance for any help. I look foward to my first Busse.

Steve

i just got to hold a reg handled Busse the other day -as i only have mags- and it felt real comfortable..... so i really like both now..... i guess i am lucky;)

The mags on my .25" FBM are too big, I'd definitely go for standard scales if you dont have very big hands.

i have medium sized hands...i can barely palm an nba regulation size basketball....

i like the regular handle size....the mags are okay, but the regular size just fits a tiny bit better...

I have fairly small hands and prefer the mags on the thinner ASH1LE and standards on the thicker CGASH1.

It's freaky. I think it depends.

I'm not a big fan of the mags on the FBM. My LE is just a little too big IMO. The SE is just about perfect.

But I really like the Mags on the ASH1 CG, LE, and on the recent SFNO I got.

For the price...the ASH1 is a VERY good value. Get one of each if you can...but get standard handles on the CG if you can only get one. Good luck.

MAGS ON EVERYTHING!! I especially like mags on the CG ASH, feels like a glove. But I have not held an ASH with standard handles.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses guys. I think I am leaning toward standard handles at this point. Unfortunately, I cant afford to buy one of each. I think that I would be fine with this, especially since the blade is as thick as it is. Thanks for the help. I still may change my mind and go with the mags, but you guys have really given some great imput. Appreciate all of your responses.

What Ban said. Thinner stock, mag handles. Thicker stock, regular handles. Worked out nicely on the ASHs.

Split the difference and buy an LE. Slightly thinner blade stock and Magnum handles. Great combination!

Regarding handguns grips, Clint Smith asks do you want to hold the big end of a baseball bat or the skinny end? He's implying of course that you'll have better control with thinner grips. I don't have particularly small hands but I've found this same thing to be true for knife grips -- thinner generally provides better control. Of course YMMV.

i have small hands and much prefer standard. i've held several knives with mags (HR and FBM) and i feel that they are comfortable in only one position: the tighter ham fisted grip you would use with heavy chopping. they're rather uncomfortable when using an angled handshake/fighting grip.

Mag handles are better than regular handles, but still too small. We need to have mag mag handles.
