Mags or no Mags

Mags on anything and everything!

I concur.

I studied ergonomics in-depth in college for my masters thesis and have come to the conclusion that mag grips are the way to go for a larger Busse knife. Reason being, the larger knives are intended for heavy task jobs (ergo: chopping). Using the ASH-1 for chopping would require larger grips for more palm-to-grip surface contact. The greater the contact area the more any impact is spread throughout the surface area, therefore reducing fatigue.

The flip side, if you intend on using the blade for battle, the smaller grip maybe more suitable to switching grips (so I understand)

A smaller knife (ergo: GW, MS), ahem, in the other hand, would be suited for more delicate work such as cleaning a rabbit or duck. Therefore the more delicate work would dictate a smaller grip for more precise control of the blade.

WTF, just purchase both mag and standard grips. Determine which one best suits your needs and send the other one to me.

I have a medium sized hand to give you an idea on size. I love my cg ash w/mags. On my batac I like the standard handles better than mags. It is just a feel thing from blade to blade.

Ditto what Gatorhog said.

On the larger knives that might be chopping/splitting I prefer the mags for the reasons he stated. I have the CGASH1 with mags and it is awesome.
I had the ASH1 SE and found it too thin for my taste.

But on knives in the BATAC size and smaller I tend to prefer the standard size slabs, handier for fine work and easier to carry.

Good advice given in buying both and keeping the one you prefer. Then start saving up for your next Busse ;)

I have fairly small hands and prefer the mags on the thinner ASH1LE and standards on the thicker CGASH1.

This is probably the best answer for most people.

Of course, I have medium hands ... and like the mags even on the CG. But I'm a very peculiar guy. In several ways. :)

I'm 6' tall, averagely athletic in size, and my only Busse is an ASH1 with Mags - and I love it. the bumps (for lack of the correct term) provide more options in terms of the ways I can comfortably grip the knife.

YMMV.

all in all, however, I think Lunde's advice is best - split the difference and get the ASH1 LE - you can benefit from the bump of the Mags but have a smaller overall diameter.

in any case, you'll have little trouble selling one if you decide you'd like to change and can't keep both.

I have both and prefer the standard slabs on the CG. My SE (thinnner stock) could benefit from slightly thicker or more contoured grips. I think the fatty CG needs standard and the thinner LE or SE benefit more from the thicker grips. I have medium hands according to the work gloves at Lowes.

I think you will find very useful this thread

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=516134,

which I started right when I was facing the same dilemma. Thanks to all the porkers who helped out, I made my mind towards the right direction for me. I say "for me" because what works for me doesn't necessarily mean that should work for everyone else.
In any event, I hope you enjoy it.
As for me, I went with Solstice's advice ;):

GO BIG
or
GO HOME

I'm 6', have fairly big hands and find that the non-mags ASH-1 CG works great for me.
