its quite possibly all of the above. Ive loved knives as far back as I can remember, attempting my first blade delete around 8th grade. There is a knife for every purpose.

I carry a knife to cut stuff. Its not a pry bar, scraper or screwdriver. I have other tools for such things.

I've carried a knife daily since I was 7, and wouldn't think of leaving home without one, unless I'm flying, which I do very rarely. The bits and pieces I carry with me every day are cash, card wallet, bandana, small Bic lighter, pen, small pry/bottle opener, comb (currently, that's a relatively new addition), keys, with flashlight on key-ring (separate torch at night, or in winter), and one or two knives. I'm only a city boy, but the knives get used far more often than anything else I carry in my pockets. I can't understand how anyone gets by without carrying a knife, when there's always so many things need cutting, like pesky clothing labels and packaging, as well as all the alligators that need skinning

Hardly a day goes by that I do not use everything on my Classic SD at least once. My EDC's rotate, but my Classic SD does not.

The SD is permanently attached to my keys. I usually use whatever other knife(s) I’m toting around for the day but when I need something the old classic saves the day.

For me, is the first and second options together, knives are beautiful and useful at the same time and this is the main reason why I keep buying, using and admiring them.

I selected #2. For me it’s main purpose is to cut things; but I have to include #1 as a near equal due to what I carry to cut things. I could easily carry a sub $30 knife like most of the people I work with and it would no doubt get the job done - I am a fairly “light” user. Instead I mainly carry GEC, so there’s no way I can say it’s not pocket jewelry (and I would apply that to other higher-quality brands as well).

And last… I am here and I post daily, more or less, on the porch. Thus I’d also loop in #4 to some degree although it’s not “why I carry” but more of an aspect of being involved in the tradition/community - BF adds another dimension of enjoyment and appreciation.

Why I carry one is as a tool. What I carry is based on both usefulness and aesthetics. Truthfully, my traditionals are almost entirely because of aesthetics.
