Maine?

I lived in Maine for three years (Belgrade Lakes), and now have retirement property I am building a house on. A note on bug repellents...Lewey's Eco-Blends ( formerly called Buzz Off) is the BEST insect repellent I have come across. It is made in Corinna, Maine and is 100% natural and Deet free. I have put it to the test several times in Maine and all over the Adirondacks (another black fly and tick haven). I do not like chemical deterrents, although deet sprayed on clothing does have its place. Besides polluting the earth, the health impacts of Deet on the human body is questionable. At any rate I don't take the risk, I think Lewey's is tops. You can find it at any number of small gas station/convenience stores all over Maine. Enjoy your trip!!!

I routinely drive from the middle of minnesota to teh canadian border and beyond, for weekends. a 8 -10 hour trip for a weekend is no big deal for most of my friends.

I was born in massachusetts, lived in maine, lived back on the Cape then moved away. My father was from minnesota yet we lived in illinois for a while and montana too. I am back in MN, I know about the distances but it is a mind set as well, if you live there it will be hard for you to see it, I never did till i moved away.

My kids played hockey here, it was not uncommon for them to each have a game or two on saturdays at opposite sides of the state. It was very uncommon for me to miss any games. I just drove. 1500 mile weekends were common.

NYC, Boston, Providence, Philly and Washington are just one connected exurbia. traffic slows you down, but its not much more than hundred miles between each in row. That is my point THEY are close, every one is CLOSE. My cousins used to think it was a HUGE trip to go down to NYC to watch the yankees play the redsox, they consider me insane for driving to KC or milwaukee to watch a couple of games. When I go, there are lots of other people from all over the midwest who travel that far to see outdoor baseball.

When I was in that area, I remember my cousins could never understand why anyone would want to live anywhere else because it was all you ever needed. People would make comments about getting stuck in the snow that someone needed to lose the next election because the street was not plowed down to pavement the evening of a snow storm. (its never.. "I need a 4wd for the 4 months of winter") Why do you need a handgun when cops are right on the next block, etc. (never mind how many people get mugged) Because it was so close, people never understood what it was to have to be prepared to handle things alone.

My response was not to the maine people, once you get away from the coast, civilization drops away pretty fast, I have been in New Sweden and Stockholm a fair amount and there is more a midwest attitude there.

Our house in Montana was a 4 mile walk to the public road. I think when we lived there there were 854 people in the county. not the town the whole County, That was Garfield county, The next nearest house was 11 miles. At 4300 square miles, that county was the size of rhode island and delaware combined, nearly the size of Ct, all of New England is about 65000 square miles, my current state of Mn is 87,000.

I was not putting people down, I was saying that it was interesting how the confines of where you live alters greatly your perspective. I was just surprised that someone who lived in CT had never made the 200 mile trip to Maine, (Hartford to Portland is about 200, hartford to Bangor is about 330 miles)

Yes please do? I have never made the trip to Maine however I do drive to the South and Mid-west to see family and vacation.. Maine had never been a destination I have need to go to.
