For those that have read the book or watched the mini-series, "Band of Brothers", Major Dick Winters passed away last week at the age of 92.

A true leader and gentleman.

Wow, that was truly a great man. At the age of 92, he led one helluva life. A moment of silence for Dick Winters.

Smoke and prayers, may he be at peace.

I think the most important aspect of his life was that he was so humble. He turned down almost every interview request except the one that made him famous (the book) because he felt that the story of the men under his command needed to be told. Try and find an officer like that today.

sad to hear, i always enjoyed listening to his stories when he would make guest appearances on shows around june 6th every year.

Greatest war series ever put together, way better than the pacific. My favorite is Lipton taking charge on the front lines during Bastogne, amazing. Rest in peace to a true hero. Love Winters, maybe one of the smartest soldiers ever.

Live respected, die regretted.

A stellar example of military leadership and upright character.

Those guys were heros, as was (is) every solider in my eyes. Mike and I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Ed Pepping (E Company 506th 101st ABN) at a law enforcement show we did in Chicago. Had a great time with him. Also bought the book Band of Brothers from him and he had added a bunch of stuff in the book. I suppose Ed is still around. He was in a wheelchair when we saw him but still spunky as hell.

Thanks for the thread!

We lose great Soldiers all the time. We all heard of Dick Winters because of Hollywood. Another great man we just lost was Bob Howard. He was a Vietnam hero. I guess Hollywood made an attempt at portraying him. Of course a little dramatized but Bob Howard could be considered the real Rambo. If you have time do a little googling about his achievements during and after Vietnam.

Regardless of the fact that we lose great American heroes all the time, Major Winters was a real American fighting man, the kind of man that the officer corps is missing in this day and age, in fact I would venture to say that he only reason we still salute officers is out of residual respect we have for men like him, we certainly know that none of them have earned it recently. R. I. P. Major Winters, if we had men like you today I guarantee my ass wouldnt have been to Afghanistan so many times!

This is true, I don't think anyone here is dimming the lights on anyones service.

Dick Winters jumped in on Normandy and kicked it at Hitler's Vacation home, and was everywher in between. In my opinion, Hollywood didn't make him famous, his exploits did. I read BoB long before the series came out. The part about the "nose in the air" German officers wife when they found the Concentration camp, still lingers in my mind today.

I pray everyday for the soldiers in harms way, both here and gone. There are too many to list, and far to many to have to list. Thats the life of a soldier.

Thank you to every one in the service, was in the service, or joining the service. I hold you all in the highest.

I am a big fan of the exploits of Winters as well as many of those heroes, I just wanted to bring to light another great man we recently lost.

In fact I am also an active duty officer in the Army and I also have been a senior enlisted man. Been on my share of deployments and dodged a few bullets in the last 18 years. I can tell you politics are much different now then they were in our previous wars and the complexity of managing wars and Soldiers have forced a new kind of hero.

If it gets me banned so be it, I didn't quite fit in anyhow: Bjblade and R.A.T. you can both go pound sound. Perhaps a few more deployments or close calls would change your mind about respect and management of our nations requirements.

Bless him, I'm sure the book or show could not do this man justice of how it really was or what he did. RIP Major

Without men like him, Europe could look very different today. Thank you Major Winters for help winning the war and freeing Europe! Rest in peace.

And to add on, I am thanking every US soldier who fought in Europe. You really made a difference!

I watched that scene, and read the events in books, with so much pride. 2nd Lt. Carwood Lipton was born and raised in my hometown of Huntington, West Virginia.
