Some of you might have heard about the fires in Oz, especially in Victoria. Whole towns have been destroyed and, so far, 66 people have died.

In my state, New South Wales, there are several fires burning in different places. There are a couple of big ones just south of me in Tumut and Wagga Wagga.

Things are looking grim for lots of people aside from those killed and those who have lost everything.

Wish us luck folks.

Certainly a land of extremes. I'll be praying for you folks.

We've got cyclone and flooding in Nth Qld - few lives lost but nowhere like what happened in Vic - 66 and still counting

Dorothea got it right all those years ago ...

I love a sunburnt country
a land of sweeping plains
of ragged mountain ranges
of droughts and flooding rains
I love her far horizons
I love her jeweled sea
her beauty and her terror
the wide brown land for me.

Towns drowned in flood waters in the north while, at the same time, others are being destroyed in the south!

My thoughts and prayers are with all of our Ozzie mates. Best of luck!

AJ

I have friends there. Just got word their house was burned to the ground. They are safe for now.

Absolutely ... I wish all of you the best of luck.:)

I hope the fires never come anywhere near YOUR compound.

Those fires are really something, searing heatwave with a bushfire is nasty. My thoughts are with you guys.

I am wondering if asking if my brother managed to sell his Timut small holding last year is politically correct. He moved to Sydney but wanted to keep the small holding.

I was a bit shocked when I heard about all the deaths on the news. I hope things don't get any worse and no more lives are lost.
Keep safe.

Andy

The folks down there in Oz are in out thoughts and prayers.

Keep safe, all of you.

I am praying for all the folks down in Oz. I am sorry to hear that people have lost lives.

Prayers sent from San Diego.

(This isn't a time to send smoke. You got enough of that already.)

You are in our thoughts and prayers....please give us an update when you can.

I was watching on BBC tonight and the pictures are terribly distressing. Is it true that some of the fires were arson? BBC are reporting a possible murder inquiry.
If this is true I hope they put the bastard away forever.

All the best to you and your family
Steven

Thanks for your thoughts folks.

The death toll continues to rise as more areas a reached. Most of Victoria has fires burning.

We know people in the middle of the worst affected areas so, naturally, we're a little concerned.

In my state there are about 80 separate fires burning but these are relatively small and mostly under control or contained. Fortunately none of them are very close to me.

Yes, it's true, they've caught two people so far lighting fires. Luckily for them the cops got to them before the people ....

The state and federal leaders are promising maximum possible punishment for the offenders, the Prime Minister even calling it mass murder!

Fire fighters, police, emergency workers and other specialists are traveling to Victoria from other states to help out.

Here is a link with more stories and pics of the fires.

Looking pretty grim for my Aussie mates on the East Coast.
Latest news from ninemsn:

The final death toll of the devastating "Hell on Earth" bushfires could be well above 200, according to reports of government crisis meetings.

With the official toll standing at 131, the fires are already the worst natural disaster to ever befall Australians.

Some of the fires are still burning, threatening the Glenhope area north of Melbourne and the towns of Beechworth and Yackandandah in the northeast.

The Victorian government has been briefed to expect a final death toll close to 230, according to a report in The Australian.

Our old mate JD, who has gone quiet on the forums of late, lives in Inglewood, which is out of the main fire area at the moment but still in the region.

Roll call JD! check in mate...

They just said on the news that there were some looters hitting empty houses that people had run from. :barf::barf::barf: Way too many words I can only use in whine and cheese to describe the kind of people that would do that. The same for the people that lit them. The PM called it mass murder? Damn right, I hope they go to prison for as long as they can get.
