While the Guyot Standard and the Klean Kanteen are great for winter use, they lack a handle to hang them from a pole over a fire. Here is a simple solution for under $3.

Go to any hardware store and buy 1/16" stainless wire. Pick up the smallest possible aluminum ferrules and make your own. Simply cut the wire to length. I like having a 1" loop and a 3" loop with 18" in between. Pound the ferrule flat with a flat surface and a hammer.

Attach to your bottle with a couple wraps and pass the larger loop through the smaller. Hang the larger loop on a suitable pole and begin heating your water!

Hope this helps!

Excellent idea. I have used snare wire and coat hangers for coffee cans, but I like this better.

That is a very cool idea. It looks heavier than it needs to be, though...at least for a 27 oz. capacity KK. Wonder if I can get finer wire?

This weighs nothing! It isn't heavy at all. Trust me! BTW, it is shown on a 40 oz KK.

damn! That outdoes my ghetto-fabulous mod. Tetanus anyone? I've been meaning to change it, your idea is just the ticket!

Am I remembering someone who used swivel snaps and something to put one together, maybe it was leader wire or something. Does anyone remember that?

Will it stay on the bottle when it's not under tension? Or does it wanna spring open? Either way, you can work with it. I'm just curious.

Single wrapped, it will want to spring off. Double wrapped like pictured here isn't such an issue.

That is a fantastic idea; thanks for posting it. I'll be making one myself very soon, as I just this afternoon ordered a Guyot bottle to replace my trusty coffee can.

Nice, Kev! I tried to go that route some time back and all of the cable at the hardware store was too heavy. I ended up using a braided steel fishing leader which has been plenty strong and wraps out of the way under the lip.

Yeah, that was me, Joe. Here is a link to my "Pimp my Guyot! thread.

The Guyot has been kind of relegated to day hikes (hunts). On planned overnights, I'll have a cooking pot and I'm trying to keep the weight down.

nice, clean looking solution the problem.

i've been using a piece of single strand steel wire set up much like the one you have there, but it is rather grungy looking and not as strong i'm sure.

Very handsome Kevin! I spent a while a few nights ago trying to find a way to make a coat hanger work for me, but couldn't find a compromise between dedicated 'hanger' and something that I could still drink out of comfortably.

I'll give your way a try next week.

This weighs nothing! It isn't heavy at all. Trust me! BTW, it is shown on a 40 oz KK.

I made my bottle "tether" today. I bought 3 ft of 1/16" cable for 75 cents. The aluminum ferrules were the same (from Lowes.) Mine is an inch or so shorter than Kevin's, and it weighs .3 ounces. What a great idea!

made a trip to Lowe's yesterday and bought spent my $1.50 and made one of these.

Can't wait to get out this weekend and try it.

thanks Kev

This works really well, but I will tell you what happened to me my first time doing this.

I used to use a 2.5'' copper pipe for water, and I made a noose like this. Well when the water was done boiling I started to set the thing down and all the tension was released from my bottle and it started to tip and spin around then you naturally pull up on the wire and then things can get bad fast with hot water splashing around.

If I can make a suggestion here, dig a small hole for that hot bottle to sit in when you want to remove it from the fire. Kind of like a cup holder in the ground. Trust me on this one. Also, thin wire. Thin wire is not as spring loaded as thicker wire and does not loosen up as easy when you don't want it to. It also does not hurt to have a forked stick handy to balance things out.
