make a knife out of a old file

The first knife I ever made was out of an old file. Try to use flat files (mill or lathe files) rather than half rounds (pipeline files) as you'll have a lot less grinding to do. I've heard of guys grinding hardened files, but your best bet is to anneal, normalize, grind and shape, heat-treat, temper, and finish.

Always good to see another welder on here!

Have a good one,
Nathan

Try to find a Nicholson. They are top quality steel. W-2, as best I can find out. DO NOT quench in water.

ok thanx guys i will do that i got about 3 old ones different widths i'll let ya know how it goes

My second and third knives were forged from Nicholson files. Worked ok. Back then I knew nothing about HT so they didnt come out so well.

The only problem is you can't really determine the type of steel. Kind of a "mystery steel".
