In the Precellphonistene era, primitive humans had the leisure to think up all kinds of goofy stuff. It's always amusing when people explain the Before Times to me. I was there man!
What I’m hearing from that is that you believe that the spectrum of knife uses for most people has shrunk to what one blade can handle. I believe that could be true, for most people.
As a representative of the somewhat old days I respectfully disagree. Multiple blade shapes were as useful then as they are now, and having 3-in-1 is/was more practical than carrying three different blades. It's always amusing when people explain the Before Times to me. I was there man!
Google Western 743 stockman. Made years ago, no longer available......Thank y'all for your input! It sounds like a stockman is what I need to be looking into. On that front, I read a claim from some time ago that there is a variant of the stockman called the Great Western, which featured a clip, sheepsfoot, and long spey rather than the regular short spey. I have had some difficulty finding another source for this, however. Does anybody know about this style and whether or not it is still available?
In the not so distant past the vast majority of men carried a knife daily. Today that is not the case. I would guess in this country only 15-20% of men carry a knife daily, if at all (somewhat higher in the south). Most of the old timers I know, and I'm 66 myself own many knives both pocket knives and fixed blades. and IMO vintage tradition pocket knives are generally far more interesting and often better constructed than modern knives. We now live in a far more sedentary culture and unfortunately activities like hunting, fishing, scouting and other outdoor related activities where carrying a knife, often a multi-blade pocketknife was and is essential have been in decline for years.Otherwise, if multiple blades were so functional, wouldn't you see more modern knives like that? Knife collectors don't turn to traditionals because of the additional utility they offer, they get pulled in because it's fun to learn the different patterns and their intended uses.
You may want to do a search on ebay for a Western 743 Stockman.Ahh I see, well thanks for letting me know!
Which my version of that one has.The marlinspike can be useful for splicing rope, or perhaps more frequently for untying knots that have been loaded. Personally I favor the locking spike style where the bail is also the spike release, but that’s just me.
