First things first, I have a raccoon problem, , but they have gotten smarter about the trap. They know now not to step on trip plate. I want to rig up an electric eye beam of sorts to electronically trip a relay that pulls the release on the trap door, The electric eye or beam is easy, but I need it to trip a relay that will activate a solinode or something else that will release the trap door. In other words when animal is inside trap, he breaks the beam, activates the pull on the release and now I will have another raccoon for the humane society. Any suggestions,
Thanks for your help.

set up another trip plate that trips the main one or hide the bait under the plate. if they are hungry enough, they will try and get it.

The trap trip plate is hinged on the entrance side at rear of cage. If I put food or bait under plate, it prevents the plate from going down and tripping the release. I want to make one that is tripped by body blocking beam, already know what size animals I am dealing with and will set height accordingly. But what I can not figure out is what will pull the release. I am going to disengage the old trip plate as the release on there now needs a pull of 1/8'' to trip the door.

Is there a reason that you can't use a regular leg hold trap?Usually if a coon is to smart for one type of set, changing the set will get results.Your idea of the electric beam would probably work,it just seems like a lot of trouble for a coon.

I love the thrill of making something no one else has. Plus, I have a MAJOR infestation, it needs to work every night without fail. Turns out a guy not 1 mile as the crow flies from me feeds the raccoons 40lbs of dog feed every week, he raises them cause they are cute .

With that many coons and especially if they are "fed" coons,a dozen leg hold sets would work at least 4 or 5 times every night without all the aggravation.:DI do understand the idea of doing something different but it still seems like a lot of trouble for what your trying to accomplish.

Not an outdoorsman, can you give me a link on leg holds?
Thanks,
Jim

BTW: Cotton Ball with PB will be tried tonight.
Thanks Richard

An electric eye trigger seems like a great idea to me, a trap that even raccoons wouldn't be able to steal the bait from, but I don't know how to implement it.

A guy in Wilderness & Survival has been flattening mice with a miniature figure 4 deadfall: Another one bites the dust

You'd need some stuff out of your local Radio Shack, plus a soldering iron, and a solenoid. You can make that last bit yourself, but it's a little tricky. If you really want to do it, and have the time, let me know.

I have the eyes, the relays but I am thinking of an electric fan motor to wind up a light fishing line, as soon as the motor is tripped by the eye, it will wind up the line very quickly and pull the release, especially if there is no slack in line. Only takes about a pull of 1/16'' to 1/8'' to trip it if working directly at the door release. All the other wires would be disconnected as they are in about 3 or 4 sections. I think that slows down the release. But I was hoping for some type of solinode that would snatch it quicker and without the noise.

I am pretty good with soldering iron. I am ready when you are, my email address is jimt@raingard.com

Links with part numbers would be a plus, if you have the time.

I'd have to know what kind of relay you have to tell you how the wiring works, but it sounds like Josh K has you covered.

Surplus Center has all the parts you would need, and they're cheap. I'd recommend something like this for the trigger mechanism:
http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2008112918020542&item=11-2298&catname=electric

You could mount it on the outside of the closed end of your trap and use a wire to hook it directly to the linkage for the door catch. When you put power to the solenoid it pulls with a 3/4" stroke, which would be perfect for drawing the linkage rod that crosses the top of the cage and releases the door.

Thanks for the link, I ordered it and it was exactly what I was looking for, I can handle the wiring, the 12v dc was perfect, same voltage needed for eyes. Makes things a lot simpler. Thanks Again, Jim

Email's been sent for what it's worth. ;) Good luck eitherway. Maybe make a hat/cap? :D

there was a video on youtube about making a paintball marker fire using electric beam whatever, i'll try to find it.

So, how do I apply for a Boon hat? Send one over to the guy who feeds them as a commission.

Well, I improvised till the parts come in, I put peanut butter on a cracker under the trip plate, got me a 25 lb opossum last night. Not the Coon I was looking for, but the opossum is home tonight. :D
