I am looking for a good way to make hawk handles thicker. I have used paracord wraps but seems to sacrifice grip does anyone have any good ideas for this? Thanks for any forthcoming info! Ps I have rather large paws.:jerkit:

hamhands,
While it negates being able to remove the head, something that looks good & wears well is copper wire. Strip down scraps of electrical wire, drill small hole at one end of wrap, fill hole with expoy, insert wire and let set. Wrap handle and repeat hole and epoxy process at end of wrap.

We did this with steel wire below the heads of our splitting mauls to prevent gouging but woll work for grip area too. If it feels slick, just scuff the coper wire with 60 grit paper.

Drill out the rivets and go with a piece of real wood. Start oversize and whittle away to get more comfortable. Dunno what it is you're dealing with but rolls of springy string (paracord, to me) would be a last ditch effort. Wound leather sounds good though but will be difficult to keep in place.

Leather is good, fiberglass casting tape works well too.

Or look into something called Sugru.

What hawk are you dealing with?

Have you ever considered pulling your own handle? I'm wanting to get a pull knife and use some maple I have on the property so I won't have to keep buying handles for when things break.

It's probably one of the most satisfying things in life fashioning your own handle. All you need is a draw knife, and sand paper.

Pretty much any hawk I have from h b forge to cold steels any wooden handled hawk is just tiny for anything but throwing.
I have a couple draw knives and spoke shaves the only thing I'm short on is time. Thanks for all the input.

If you like the paracord look but if it is to large try pulling the core out. One of the slickest looking handles that I've seen was with paracord wrap was like this.

Do you soak it in epoxy first like the cloth or.just wrap it like paracord?

Yes, soak it in epoxy. You can then proceed to wrap it as thick as you like. The result is very durable and very grippy. I wrapped a CS tomahawk haft that way for someone back in 1998 and he still has it.

lol guys tried several of these and my old man gave me some .0625 cable tried that works like a charm. just wear gloves lol

Ham, If you do the wrap like you would whip the end of a piece of cut rope (hard to explain- but fairly easy to do, especially if you used to be in boy scouts)
, you don't have to worry about a knot anywhere, or another option is to epoxy and tack the ends with a brass tack or a small wire nail.
