Rescue or tommy tap works for many applications, and it only sticks to itself so it does damage/mar the underlying surface. It also provides excellent traction even when wet. You might also try vet wrap which can be found at agricultural coops. It works pretty good and can be found in several different colors or patters. Also the vet wrap provides a better cushion for your hands when compared to the rescue/tommy tape.
 
Takes some skill but if you can laminate additional wood around your handle then that's what I'd do, but then again I have lady hands so it's not a problem:) Hey Arathol what is that double bit hawk man:thumbup: Awesome.
