1st: collect about a half cup of pine or other tree sap/pitch, a half cup of candlewax, and a half cup of Vaseline. Optional ingredient: 1/4 cup of Pyrodex or similar gunpowder

2nd: set up a DOUBLE-BOILER pot, (this is for your own safety, DO NOT melt the above ingredients directly on a burner in a single pot!). Melt the 3 ingredients and stir well. Once melted, remove from the stove and dip HALF of a cottonball into it, let the excess drip and set aside on wax paper to cool.

3rd: once the cotton balls are cold, roll up so they look like a big grub (oval-like). Tuck away in your fire kit.

basically the cotton ignites very quickly with spark or flame, and the wax and pitch and p/j melt and spread quickly, with a nice BIG flame. I added the pitch because i found it was VERY resistant to wind and rain (flame out)

Optional: only for the experienced, and NOT for kids to make or play with, OK?

Once you have dipped the cotton ball and while the wax is still setting, dip in a bowl of Pyrodex or similar gunpowder. and roll with your fingers to form a grub shape.

when you ignite the cotton ball with spark or flame, the top 3 ingredients melt and flame up, and the powder also flares up quite large. This has the effect of scattering the melted flaming wax/pitch/PJ all over your wood shavings and fuzzsticks, resulting in a larger faster burn and ignition of your materials. It does not "blow up" , more like a sparkler type action.

again, safety first, !

MODS, I meant to add this to my other thread "new firestarter". feel free to merge or move or??

Dude! This sounds like my next project. Hopefully the soaker we're getting right now will squash the burn ban and I can actually try it out.

Thanks for posting that. I will give it a try. The tree sap may be hard to getup here but the rest should be easy.

Tag, saving this little "cook book" for later :D.

Quick question though. Do you roll it so that the exposed cotton is facing out, or so that the dried up hardened side is facing out?

does'nt really matter, i pull apart and shred the cotton ball when i'm ready to ignite my tinder pile and fuzzsticks. Plenty of spark catching dry cotton

I'm also experimenting with adding paper matchheads into the mix, or additional flare up flame action.

yes, i'm bored today, its a monsoon outside..... :D

I use cottonballs w/ vaseline and some magnesium shavings in it. Throw a spark and stand back!

Sorry, new guy here. What's the best way to obtain pitch/tree sap?

look for a pine tree that has a broken limb , you'll often find tons of sap oozing out at the wound.

Another way is to make a 3" angled slice into the wood, tap a nail in at the bottom of the slice, and hang a plastic cup right next to the bark. sap will ooze out into the cup, best done during a hot spell.

Just walk thru the woods and look for pine or spruce trees. If you cut firewood, you'll find lots oozing out of the end grain after you buck the rounds.

.

If you can find beeswax, try cutting the other wax 50/50 with it. It really gives a nice burn.
