make your own fatwood + nuclear firestorm tinder paks

Bushman, I made one of these, and when I lit it up I wasn't getting the magnesium flare up, any ideas?

Do you shave the mag off of a mag block? Or use a file or something like that?

I got one of the Coghlans(sp?) from walmart and used the spine of a knife to shave pieces off, nice little tight curls, the thing still burned hot for about half an hour, just no flare ups????
 
Hi Grunt, i clamped the mag bar into a vice, then used an pawn shop (cheap) wood plane to get big pieces. I crumbled those into the mixture.
 
hmmmmm, so you did have big pieces in there huh? I'm thinking I had too much wax, I've got another one I'm gonna try out here soon, it still worked great so thanks for the idea!!!!!
 
Any ideas on how this would work without pitch? Or, if I can't get any pitch, is there anything you can think of to sub for it that can be bought at a store?
