Maker Interviews as a Topic in W&SS

I'd love the chance to be interviewed. All too often I am in short supply of folks around where I live that love knives and the outdoors as much as I do....much less carry on a conversation about them. I'm in if you'll have me.

If I didn't make (and sell) knives and hadn't gotten Sierra into sheathmaking I'd have NO ONE to talk to about blades.

ALLOWED! As long as I can do just one or two audio interviews!
now which one of you makers has skype

We could potentially draw up a list of interviewers (interested in doing so) and interviewees (knife makers). Somebody mentioned qualification - a knifemaker status- which should be discussed as a criteria to be the in the 2nd pool. Of course both interviewer and interviewee should be agreeable to being subject to this experiment.
.

I didn't even see this post. what a fun idea!

bump. Lets not let this thread die.

Okay Joe....I'm a bit tied up now, but will start trying to put something together on this tomorrow. I suggest we post two new threads. 1) Knifemakers willing to be interviewed and 2) Forumites will to be interviewers. We give both posts 2 weeks to accumulate victims, err, volunteers then we start the Dating game :D :D

Interesting idea. We do have some kind of interview process when someone posts about a trip or adventure and answers questions about it. This would be a more focused beginning, with one-on-one questions and answers specifically about knifemaking. Then the group could jump in and ask more questions.

We can expect some background on wilderness interests, experience, and equipment, as well. Then how the maker got into actually making knives and where he is going with his work, as well as any other jobs he holds, especially in materials or machining.

If we structure the heading something like INTERVIEW: John Smith, they will all be easy to find.

All the interviews don't even have to be with knifemakers. For example, kgd just had a great story about a shipboard class he gave. Serious insight there into how we actually do something in the natural world, not just sit around a campfire at night.

This is a good idea. I was thinking to perhaps decide on a series of questions like kgd's. Then get a set numbered list of, for example, five or ten makers interested - sort of like the pass around threads. Going in the order each volunteers, the maker then responds to the questions (with a word limit for each), and then there's an "other" section on the questionnaire for anything extra they'd like to add. The thread is kept open for a week for give-and-take and then locked. The next maker on the list then comes to bat, etc.

That would seem to simplify it, allow us to hear from various makers, and not have anybody needing to volunteer to do an interview. It also gives a good reference to refer back to as well as the allowing each maker to know how much time will have to be committed. The week allows for individual questions and also lets the makers add anything they might have forgotten in the intial answers.

I feel like Im nearing three cents of my allotted two.

I wouldn't lock the threads.

I think certain set questions are good but an actual interviewer is too. The dynamics of a live conversation are better than what would otherwise look like a job application form.

Agreed. Both styles have their merits. Perhaps let the maker review your "standard" questions for a day or two to get his thoughts together, then conduct your interview live.

I think it's a good idea to give the person interviewed a chance to think. I agree an interviewer is a good idea, as long as there is a chance to check for accuracy. It is easy to get things 'wrong' otherwise.

I only mentioned locking the threads so attention could be focussed on the next person...but that's probably not going to be a problem.

hybrid!

I think if I was being interviewed, having thought about this, I'd like a posted interview- do an email, chat, irc, aim, even some phone (I hate phones. My ears don't like them for whatever reason) interview, clean it all up for publication, then push it out there. Then, once that's out, having the thread be open for clarification and further interview stuff would be awesome. It can grow that way, but still have a solid core to read to begin with and base off of.

From an interveiwers perspective, I'd probably also prefer to do it this way, I seem to have my thoughts together better when I type. Some phone would be fine, but not too much.
