Makers east of Kansas City

My name is Joe and I'm 24. I am curious if there are any knife makers east of Kansas City. I live in Missouri and the closest maker is about a mile from me but he has no interest in helping anyone learn. The second closest that I know of is a little over an hour from my house, but he mainly makes hunters and bowies in Damascus. I'm curious if there are any guys in lees summit, blue springs area, or even closer, that would be willing to spend a few weekends giving me some pointers and maybe just talking knives. My girlfriend gets awful tired of hearing about them. I think that she thinks I have a problem. Haha.
Anyway. I Live in Sedalia, mo. I have a nice shop, it's just empty. I use files and play around. I've made a few knives.
After stock removal and forging and watching Damascus be made, I think I want to forge but I want my focus to be on kitchen knives. I understand it's a hard field to enter but I like a challenge.

I don't know of any full time makers that close either, but check out http://www.kansasknives.org/
It is a really good group of guys ranging from absolute beginners all the way to ABS Mastersmiths, with everything in between. We have a get together every few months. I especially recommend the Bladesmithing Symposium held in Topeka every October.

I'm about an hour south of the metro, and consider myself just an upstart myself but am always up for chatting and learning anything and everything I can. I also know of a few others who are really good for only being in it for a year or so and are closer to you.

Let me know if you think I might be able to help with anything.

Hey Salolan,
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Hopefully a few of the others you spoke of that are closer to me will weigh in. But I really appreciate you offering. You are only 2 hours away from me, which is fairly close. If you ever want some shop company I would definitely be interested in making the drive and spend a day with you. I looked at some of your work, and its good stuff. It looks like I could learn a thing or two from you.
Thanks,
Joe

Thanks Joe, I appreciate the compliments. I wouldn't be opposed to company either. Justin Presson is one I thought of and I believe he is in Independence. I don't think the guy I spoke of from Lee's Summit frequents here. He is a member on the website I posted though.

The next KCKA shop tour is April 4th but it is in Witchita. The July meeting has yet to be set, hopefully it will be closer. If you hadn't already planned on attending, I would also recommend opening your calendar in September for the International Custom Cutlery Exposition to be held in KC.

I do not think I could swing going to witchita that soon, I looked up the kcka and I think that looks pretty neat. The deal in September I will definitely attend. The next few weekends after this upcoming one I am free. So Maybe we could work something out.
Hopefully Justin will reply.

Me.....what? I would be happy to show you what I know but keep in mind I'm only a year in myself. Unfortunately right now I have 0 time to even work on any of my projects. Once things chill out from the new baby and a few other things maybe we could talk.
I'm actually located north west of Liberty in KC. You can email me if you want to talk more, should be in my profile.
