Oops posted before I finished the post...fast edit!!!

So, I bought two pantographs last week.... Both are New Hermes GM models with 2:1-7:1 ratios....manual drag type,no motor.....

I bought two without fonts because all the standard fonts are not to my liking...

I am looking at getting the Script Style font set by Scott....My font tray is 1-1/4"... Of the sizes offered which would be best? I know even at 7:1 I need fairly small letters in my font set to get a mark small enough to mark a spine, etc.... The couple fonts it came with are around 1" and at 7:1 would MAYBE fit on a spine....The Script type font looks like it would work well even to engrave stuff like 154CM or S35VN, 1084/15N20, whatever I want....

My mark is going to be simple. After I play with it,I'll order a separate custom template.

Thoughts on my mark? B.Ayres-Oregon Maybe just B.Ayres. I want the mark to be simple, and let the art/beauty of the knife show without distraction....

I have several different diamond drags that I'll try, but it was recommended I use a 90 degree cutter/drag tip....

I have several sizes of font to choose from... Should I get the ML291?

Are there other makers of font sets? From my research the newer plastic font sets have a better life than the brass....

Any advise is welcome. Thanks

Just remember that on the largest setting (2:1) your engraving will be 1/2 the actual size of your type.
Before you order anything, make sure the machines will engrave an absolutely straight line. Use the font holder edge to trace. Chuck a piece of metal in the vise, as you would a blade spine, and drag a line along the metal. If it is not perfectly straight, you will have some adjusting to do.
Remember that templates can be C-clamped to the table also.

I have the exact same Pantograph. Its important that all three number settings are set to the same number. Failure to do so will give you the dreaded text to creep up or down instead of travelling to the right like it should.
Mine works well and I do as you intend to just drag the stylus and no motor.
I custom made a makers mark and it works well for me. I used the larger of the two dovetail slots for the overall height of the makers mark.
Have been very pleased with my unit.

The GM is a great little machine. I have 3 of them. New Hermes sells type, also.
They are not meant for rotary engraving steel, so you don't need the motor anyway. Be aware that you can break the diamond tips by applying too much pressure, so don't try to engrave too deeply.

:) Brian, you mentioned having a custom template made. Guess I'm kinda hijacking this thread. I use a New Hermes also and was just wondering where I could get a custom template made? thanks

If you are interested in Custom Templates contact customer service for a quote. Engrave your own logo or insignia on name tags and signs with a custom template. Simply send us your camera ready artwork (50-100% larger than the engraved logo is to be), and specify what the engraved logo's dimensions are to be.
