I would like to have a makers mark to place on my work.
Here are a couple that I am thinking of sending out for a stencil to be made.
JCS are my initials and Spool is my last name.
What do you experienced guys think, both stencils get wise, and market wise?

I think the biggest thing to remember is you mark your blade becaus you want people to know you made it and to bring you more customers when thy see knives you made in the past. So with that said I will say this, I have gone from super simple to very detailed and back to simple in my markings. Currently I tang stamp and have been doing that for a while. I use a stamp that I made at one of my jobs and it just says J.J.TODD. Its simple, to the point and easy to do. I have stencils but prefer a steel stamp. Sorry not trying to muddie the Watters. Me personally, I like the first one with spool blades but would Chang it to just J. SPOOL or just SPOOL but that's just me. I'm not the greatest judge of these things though so let's see what other makers say.

I agree with JT, I like the first one with the exception that the font appears to have a fine outline that may not hold up well when etching. I think a solid font would work better for you. Also, take your printout, cut it out and place it on a few blades to see what you think of the size.

Just Spool would be great. "Blades" would be redundant since its kind of obvious that it's a blade and most likely even a knife :-D
If however "spool blades" is your trade mark put the whole thing on there.

As others have said, your 'Spool Blades' logo has a drop-shadow effect that won't work well as a black-and-white mark.

I guess I'm weird in that I don't like having my logo shown on my knife, I prefer a sterile look. I hide my mark on the inside of the liners so as to not distract from the knife.

You and among few elite, such as Stan Wilson leave their simple mark within. Tastefully done, that is good taste...focus is on their artistic handiwork rather than their big sign...even some regrinder leave their huge logo on the blade...

Pittknife, you shown some fine custom knife over at the Green forum. I am an admirer.

I'm a big believer in having your name on the knife, instead of a logo or three initials. At first I used the logo you see in my icon/avatar, but for maximum exposure, switched to "S Davenport".

I like simple also. As much info with as few words as you can. Mine just says Rochester and Seneca, SC. Anyone who comes across my knife should be able to find me pretty easy.

Wow thanks brother, I'm surprised anyone has seen my knives. I'm just a wannabe and it's in case I make a really bad knife it's easier to pretend it's not mine if my name isn't on it.......lol

If there must be etching or stamping I really like guys that do a cursive signature with their name .

Credit goes to you my friend, no thank you needed.

If obvious logo is shown, I am in complete agreement, as you said, cursive signature(something like Stan Wilson, on hidden small gold piece) - or like the old Japan KnifeMaker, free hand hammer/chisel their family name in perfect flowing kanji - now, that is something to behold right!? :)
