So I'm trying to develop a maker's mark... upon completing my first two knives something was definitely missing from both of them, and I'd like something for my future knives to come.

Here are two initial designs I've come up with.

First is my first initial and last name

This one is all 3 of my initials.

Here are a couple more that are a bit different. I feel the one with "Canada" underneath is a bit too texty though...

I'm partial to using my full set of initials because most of my family calls me "J.K." for short, so I'd like to keep that somewhat incorporated.

Comments/critiques welcome! I want to really make sure it looks good before I order a stencil from Ernie!

Definitely use your full last name. Honestly I think the last one "JK Wolff - Canada" is great even without the pawprint. A mark can easily start looking kind of too-big on small blades. The font is a good choice, looks cool but still clear and easy to read.

When I started trying to come up with a makers mark I started out with this

but evolved into this

Something simple and recognizable. I went with both initials because there is both a G Mason and a S Mason making knives. The maple leaf is just because I am Canadain:D

Hmmm thanks for the feedback guys. Unky I did find your thread in a search for stencil info a while back, I really like how your mark turned out

James. I think I get what your saying about the size.. with the paw on the end it seems to make the logo too "long" even once it gets shrunk down. Since I will get 2 sizes done just like unky I think I should probably omit it, or just have it as a separate etch that I can use as I please.

I'll work on these more a bit later when I get a chance and post more mockups.

It should be simple and "searchable" via the internet. I don't see any other makers when I search "Wolff knives" in Google. "JK knives" brings up John's site. I think "WOLFF" and your print logo would work just fine. Go minimalist... overly large marks are an eyesore.

This coming from the guy with the squiggly lines for a mark:p Good thing your works stands out from the crowd and is instantly recognizable.

To be honest about the sizes the larger one that I got is too big for anything I make, I think that the next time I order I will be going with 1/4" for the big and 3/16" for the small, but I will double or triple up on the 1/4" size

I'm partial to the pawprint, but I agree that the name and pawprint are a bit too long. Have you thought about J. K. WOLFF on one side of the blade and the pawprint on the other?

Jonathan,
The more your mark identifies the work as Yours, the better...as long a your work is always the best you do and is marketable with your reputation and skill.....
Given that being really good, the best it identifys the work as yours, the better the mark is.

Damn! Rick that is amazing, thank you!! Darrin, thanks for the idea!

I'm so torn now... because I also REALLY like tait's idea for my name on one side, and the paw print on the other... (also similar to the way rick does it ;))

Decisions decisions... I suppose I could always get 2 sets of stencils made. Might get kind of expensive though, I will have to talk it over with Ernie.

I really like the logo with the wolf instead of the O (it might also look good inside the O, but might end up too small to be practical).

Maybe you can go for the WOLFF/pawprint on one side and use the other for steel type, knife model name, or both?

Seems like I'll have to ask here when I get around to working on a mark!

Well thank you all very much for your help with this!

I have sent my email off to Ernie to see what he comes up with. But I decided on doing the WOLFF with the paw as the O, and I will be etching the blade steel type on the other side of the blade or spine of the blade.

Thanks again!
