Makers Marks - Way to check if it's been used before?

I have googled a bit and came up with a maker using with initials NK but not on their logo or anything.

I haven't decided on a logo but I think I'll keep it simple with initials and maybe a maple leaf.

Anyone heard of a CNK or CNKnives before, or do you think those may work for me?

Haven't heard of it, you should probably do a search for registered business names through whatever agency handles business licensing in canada. It's possible that someone owns that name but has yet to publish or use it.

Thanks guys

Checked out that thread, and nothing remotely similar to what I have in mind. Some great logos though!

That plus Google showing nothing close I think I'm good. I'm not going to bother registering as a business yet as I'm still a beginner and won't be selling for a while, especially not in enough volume that I would have to claim it as income. At this point if I make some really nice stuff I will sell to friends for cost of materials only. But I'd like them identifiable in case I ever do start selling them on the side or with much luck full time.

"Knives 2013" or one from that series is a good one for finding names. The back has makers listed alphabetically and includes a description of their makers mark. Only currently used names are included but going through a few would help for certain.

Oooh. That looks like a good book :) Thanks!

EDIT: Just snagged a copy on Ebay.

Always do a internet search on exactly what you intend to mark a knife with. If it does not bring up your site within the first couple result pages... make it happin' cap'n! Your web presence has to be strong if you intend to make a business of it. If you are just in it for a hobby, your only worry is duplicating someone else's mark. Make a decent attempt at searching it out and don't worry too much about it after that.

Thanks Rick that's good advice. I hope to make it a business at least part time eventually.. the web presence won't be too big a problem as I work with computers for a living.. but it really just depends on if I get to a level where I feel comfortable selling anything. For now it's tools, then gifts for family/friends, then possibly sales :P

I haven't specifically decided on a label/mark yet, so I'm searching a few things, but so far nothing is coming close so I think I'm good as far as the label/mark goes (once I decide on one).
