Has anyone on here ever clamped a piece of wood in the shape of a half moon to their platen on the belt grinder to get a hollow grind? I know it's not the best way to go about it but I'm gonna try because I don't have a real grinder yet. I read that if you do this, you cover the rounded part of the wood with graphite covered cork for good belt sliding. Just wondering if anyone on here has tried this method. Thanks

If I recall, somebody was going to be making such devices in D2 and apparently there are some available for the buying from somebody else but they haven't been talked about much lately.

That sounds cool, at least until I can get the real thing. Hopefully someone will have some info on that. Thanks

Wayne Goddard shows how he did that very thing in The $50 Knife shop, He used a piece of graphite platen backing on top of the wood to reduce friction. Never tried it myself.

I think Daniel Winkler was also going to try it because he wanted the hollow from a 36 inch wheel to put on a cutting competition knife.

I have seen this one made of steel sold by one of the knife maker's suppliers.

I have seen this on here. Someone made on out of metal but I remember a friction heat issue with it?

A small leafspring welded to a black plate and clamped to your grinder, would make a nice huge hollow grinding platten. . . just sayin
