Hello everyone!
Im new to this forum and i have never made a knife before, but i really want to make one.
I saw a friend of mine make some damascus knives and from what i know, he has never made any knives before.

So my question is this:
I have a bunch of old Mora knives just collecting dust (they are of the cheap kind but still good steel).
Is it possible to make a damascus steel knife from old, high carbon blades?

Do i have to prepair the blades before frorging the blade?

I would like to know all the basic things that i need to know to be able to make this knife :) So add links and everything that i need to know to get a good result!

Have a great evening!

I have watched alot of vids on youtube and read some forums. But never found anything about making Damascus from old knife blades. :)

EDIT: Alot of the links in the stickies are dead..

To avoid being thought of as a Wanker Wannabee Smith or Knife Maker, Its better to simply write "pattern welded".

Personally I think you are more of a wanker if you do differentiate between damascus or pattern welded. Most use them interchangeably, in my experience the only ones that don't are the ones that read the wikipedia article and think they are experts on damascus because they read a paragraph about wootz. Yes it may be true but the term damascus has really become a trade name like micarta and is used widely in the industry to describe pattern welded steel of any sort. For example I rarely if ever hear anyone say "mosaic pattern welded" or "Devin Thomas pattern welded". My 2 cents anyway...

To the OP I think you will find making damascus out of used knives very difficult if not impossible. You can not forge weld any group of steels together into a homogeneous bar. That is why folks use combinations like 1080/15n20, 01/L6, etc. As with any learning in this business, if you got the time and money then I say go for it. If not you will probably waste a lot trying to learn that way.
