Bobwhite....it occurs to me that I watch very little television myself. I'm usually much happier in a quiet room just talking with my wife, reading a book, or playing with my guns and knives...Maybe I should start watching more TV? nah.......
Munk...I hear ya' 'bout the .338. It does seem to be a very popular cartridge up here, but not by my doing. In cartridge selections my personal favorites go straight from '06 to .375. .338 hurts too much for what power it puts out, and I'm actually more comfortable shooting a .375
and I would be carrying it if I owned one. (never quite managed to save up the money) Seen caribou lungshot with a .338, a bit more wasted meat than with the '06, but not as bad as I've expected. Only experience I've had with a .375 was getting to ring a 200 yd gong at the local range, lotsa fun anyways...
Cliff...yup, we have our California and Oregon influences up here, but mainly in Anchorage, and of course in the Universities. Lotsa people from those two areas, but not many stick around more than a couple of years. (Thank God!)
While on the topic of people who move here, I attribute alot of Alaskas alcohol, suicide, and DV troubles to that trend. (We're always among the highest in those areas, if not out right #1)
Some dipstick loser meth monkey gets sick of his life in LA and decides to buy into the whole Alaska Last Frontier bidness. Packs up his crap, moves into Anchorage, and discovers he's still got drug problems, and the winters are cold, dark, and depressing. I strongly believe that if someones not an outdoorsy type with a reasonably healthy lifestyle and coping mechanisms they don't do well here.
Also (amazingly!) I've met a surprising amount of people that moved here for the PFD...hehe...boy were they disappointed. One old boy was just staying here waiting for the big "cash out" so he could get 40K or so, then move on again....
Not sure what got me off on that tangent...guess maybe thinking about the Californians I've met that weren't doing anything at the Universities...
One good thing here...as strange as alot of us are, there's still room for everybody, so far....
