Making a Baton for camp use

This post is a complete fabrication.

How did you baton - to MAKE your baton - if you didn't HAVE a baton?

Huh? - huh? - riddle me that smart guy!!!!!

;)

I agree with your assessment of making a tool. This is not a necessary tool - but the definition of human includes the improvment of our tools. This is a tool you would use in a long standing camp. Makes life easier. I like it and plan to build one of my own so I can stop grabbing whatever is handy when I am practicing my skills.

Come on Kev, a saw? I though you could carve a tooth pick out of pine tree with your Fox River. ;)

Excellent thread,I like the FR one my favorite knives . your next project has the shape of a throwing stick....

not to nitpik, but don't you think that if you're going to all of this trouble, you'd be better off shaping your baton more gradually like a baseball bat? looks like you've just created a weak spot where the baton will break.

Beech is a great wood for impact tools. It is not a weak spot as the grain of the wood is still thick throughout the handle into the "weighted" section and is uncut. The grain is not severed and is strong throughout. I've used batons like this for years on end and over time, they will start to wear out, like anything else. However, it won't be for some time and in that time you have have a convenient tool.

This leads to another question...which baton came first?! Could'nt help myself Kevin, so, where did you find that first baton lying around? In the baton grove?...GRIN!

Ok, so why not just tote a fish bat into the woods, camp stake mallet rubber or plastic head, or a CS poly bat, or a spare hickory handle? Just tossing it out here to promote Kev's thread LOL Someone's thinking this so has anyone used any of these to baton with? Would make an interesting pictorial thread if I had a camera to show all in action and pros and cons. A good baton will have more head weight to increase the power imparted by the swing of it onto the knife spine I would suspect....
