Making a career change, Need GOOD steel toe work boots

I love safety toe boots both on and off the job,on the job I wear bates or matterhorns. Off duty I am really liking my new Ariats, they are slip on western style but not over the top. They are light weight and water proof, the insoles are very comfortable. You might want to check out their website.

Dont skimp or you can end up with a bone spur on your foot like I did. I walk on jagged bone on my 2nd metatarsal thanks to cheap boots.

I finally paid $109 for some Timberland Pro boots. If you see some at a store, pull back the insole and look at the padding underneath. It's a thick spongey material with holes to allow breathing.

Similarly priced Redwings and Wolverines had solid cardboard looking material underneath. The Timberlands also have a steel plate in the sole for puncture resistance.

It feels like walking on air compared to what I had before. Good quality work socks go a long way too.

I wear the exposed steel metatarsal at work (steel mill), I've had my feet in just about every brand out there. For the price and comfort Carolinas are hard to beat. My boots only last for about 6-8 months due to the conditions at work. I'm on my feet 12hrs a day at work and have no issues with them. Steel toe might be a whole different story though.

I wore Wolverine boots once..for "entire" 2 hours before taking them back to the store. The collars were leaving bruises on my legs, above the ankles. WTF?

I really like my carolina boots. I have worn them every day at work for over 2 years and still have tread on the soles. I usually walk 10-15 miles on concrete back and forth. I also wear them out sometimes when I dont feel like wearing my cowboy boots or other slip ons.

Worx by Redwing are their Chinese import low end.
For a casual user, Worx might be OK, but if you're looking for a daily wear boot, I would stick with the real deal.
Doc Martins are nice, but if you puncture the air pocket in the sole, you lose a lot of the cushion.

You are correct that the Worx are made in China. I don't have my Redwings in front of me, but I am 90% sure that they are made in China also. The first 2 pairs of Worxs I had I wore 5 days a week for 8+ hrs walking on concrete (indoors mostly) and they lasted well over 2 yrs each before I wore a hole in the toe and sole area. They were slip soles so super soft sole. Reason I did not purchase another pair was they had changed the style of the boot I liked and it did not fit correctly.

Very good point. It is worth investing in some Wigwam socks or other goods thick socks. You might have a pair with you when you try the shoes/boots on because you may want a half-size larger.

Couple weeks ago in a small town in Minnesota I managed to find a pair of New Balance sneakers in my size (14) and Made in USA. It was like hitting the jackpot. :D

These guys make boots here in the US. Not sure if they have any work models though: http://www.altama.com/

Well Guys, I picked up a pair of redwings this morning, and they are amazing!!!, Thanks for steering me that way.

There are so many brands out there, some super cheap some super expensive, I dont know where to start looking, I will be working indoors on concrete, need a safety toe, not slip sole, somthing that breathes well, is durable and good quality. I am not opposed to spending up to $200, I want somthing that has all day comfort, good support. Any advice, or companys to look at?

Thanks!!

Ryan

No advice on the work boots (wear engineer boots, but work in an office), but what's the career change from/to?

Zero

Well, for about 6 years I have been in a job I started as a temporary one in retail management and have been unhappy, the economy hit the area I live in extremely hard and so while I was lucky to have a job I have been trying for a long time to start a solid career. I applied for a couple different positions in the last year with a local manufacturing company that makes custom application specific wear resistant alloys, casts, and precision machines the parts. I will be running a Auto Visual Inspection Machine, but the end goal is to get into management of their quality department. I am very excited it is a huge oppertunity, and an awesome company!

What about Haix? I think you would be glad about such boots. They´re Heavy-Duty.

But I don´t know if such shoes are available in the US. You should perhaps check out the internet.

Kind regards

You did good. The only thing most people don't love about Redwing boots is the price. Hopefully you went with the stitched replaceable soles. You can reuse the uppers several times. Durable as all get out. Enjoy. And congrats on the new job.:cool:

I would throw in a good word for Danners, I had a great pair.. Decently durable, and much more comfortable than any others I tried.
