Making a FBM comfortable?

Thanks for all the advice, I'll have to look at sanding them down. Its not blisters though, my hands are doing fine that way. I just got back from a 4+ month deployment, my hand has plenty of caluses. :) It's more the bones/tendons from shock absorbsion.

I've got soft girly hands from years as a butcher, you get a nice callous between index and thumb but the rest is as soft as a baby's bottom from all that washing ;)

back when I was a mechanic I had manly man hands, oil and grease permanently lodged under nails and in pores, callouses everywhere. Women don't like being touched with them for some reason :o

Fixed it....

LOL, funny!! ...But I really didn't do much to that photo except add a tiny bit of saturation, and tone down the white on the blade... mebbe stepped up the contrast a notch or 2... I can't remember on that one.

Here's one from yesterday... the FBMLE is to the left of the cat, the HOGFSHLE, oiled for the first time, is what she's checking out. All 4 were freshly oiled before I took the pix.

I think that the brilliant sunlight had much to do with how the color looks in that other photo.

THIS one, I really ramped up the saturation!

those are beautiful photos Jaxx!!

what are they, BATAC, HOGFSHLE, FBM LE, is the second from the left a SJTAC LE?

Corwise,
For a few bucks at a local sports store, you could probably get some type of grip tape to wrap your handle with. Some of the stuff I have seen seems to have rubber or foam in it and is very resilient to hard use. I have found that it helps to eliminate vibration while providing a surer grip even though I am squeezing the handle less. I think it might be the solution to your problem, but if not, you wouldn't be out but 5 or 6 dollars.

Bike handlebar tape also works. Problem is you NEED STANDARD GRIPS so that you hands can get around the thing. That is why I do not like MAGS.:D

If you actually use your knife std handles are the way to go. You can use gloves or wrap the handle and it is perfect. Mags just make it feel like the thick end of a Bat.

In my experience* I find that sometimes folks tend to swing too hard, not letting the blade do it's job. There is no way to instruct you here but well placed blows with a loose but controlled grip will keep you from suffering so much pain in your hand and wrist. Once you start getting this right you will just feel the right swing and angle to use and reduce the discomfort.

*My work in the field while land surveying for 20 years taught me how to save my hands, back, shoulders and elbows during repetitive chopping, sometimes 9 hours a day, 5 days a week but that was not always the case. You have the 'sharp blade' part covered now just let it do the work.

I sanded down a set of blue/black mags on a FBM. What a difference in feel. Then I gave it to a cop friend of mine for X-mas. "Ya know what I need? A machete." "Wait for Christmas. I'll get you one."

He STILL talks about that knife 2 months later. LOL

I would think std-scales coudl be covered by that medical griptape they use on hockey sticks. I forget hte name. I've got it on my Glock. Wrap it up, it's tacky and soft. Might help if you had stds's. (Probably too fat on mags.)

+1

If the BM handles are giving you problems you could try using a load of rubber bands on the handle to pad it out in areas and add a bit of grip and shock absorption. Either that or the tape you can get for ice hockey sticks or golf clubs or squash rackets all works well and is quick and nonpermanent.
As for the RTAK II, before I had a BM I used mine fairly often. Then I got a BM and didn't look back. The flex in the RTAK always worried me and quite often when chopping I had fears that the knife would break. The BM has never given me any worries about stuff like that. Not only does it eat the jobs I have for it, it also challenges you to take on bigger tasks and hit harder than you did before.
Someone on BF once mentioned in a post that you should buy the best you can afford because otherwise you will pay a lot more by slowly working your way up to the best kit anyway. I totally agree with that philosophy. The BM is the champ of choppers IMO.

Thanks for all the words. I'll try and run by the sports store and find something to put on the handle. We'll see about sanding down the Mags to make it easier, see how the tape feels first.
RoyalM- I agree about the RTAK. I have one from before I bought the BM, and I definitely prefer the BM. Just haven't gotten rid of the RTAK yet, and since there were two of us, I brought it out to use.
mHawg - Thanks for the idea, I'll try and work on the grip and all.

Have a good one.
