Making a forging hammer

I do have a problem, I can not get the handle out of the head. it took a 20 ton press to get it where it is and i maxed out the press. can i use a 1/8" ball end mill and cut a slot in the handle with out removing it.
 
Very good looking hammer. I had a Japanese hammer, and never really got used to it... its definitely different.
