I found an air tank thats a good size for a forge at the flea market today and picked it up, ive been doing searches on the internet at homedepot, lowes, ace hardware, and have not been able to find a seller of inswool or any type of ceramic fiber insulation. do i have to order it online? i was kinda hoping i would be able to get it around town.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not likely you will find it locally. Try pottery supply houses. Also, ask your local machine shop who does their heat treating, and go ask those folks where they get their refractory supplies.

A.P. Greene, Matrix, Allied....All refractory suppliers. You won't be able to find it retail.

Just get it all from Darren Ellis. He has everything you will need. Shipping is very low with him, and his prices are so good that you will most likely save more than the shipping, especially since it will all go in one or two boxes. I wouldn't buy from anyone else.He is also glad to help you with expert advise that is tailored to knife making forges and supplies. His FAQs on the site will help a lot, too.

If you look in the yellow pages, especially in the San Antonio area, you can probably find a supplier of Kaowool. I buy mine locally (Mobile, AL), and I found the supplier by just looking in the yellow pages. Look under "Refractory" or "Refractories". Good luck!

I have been looking locally to me for quite some time and have found that there ain't alot of places that sell what I am looking for. Way I got it figured, is if you get lucky, cool. If not, like me, I will have to order it to get what I need.

ok, thanks, ima try the yellow pages, when i begin to make it il post its progression with pics..

i found some locally by calling some insulation places. The only problem is you have to buy a large roll. I have heard many good things about Darren Ellis so if it was me I would order from him.

Personally, I agree with the advice everyone is giving. Anyone in search of refractory supplies in the quantities we use can't go wrong with Darren and Karen Ellis. Their prices are fair and their service is beyond exemplary!

However, it was my inperpretation of the original post that he wanted to find what he needed locally and not order over the net.

The answer to the basic premise is, generally speaking, yest, these supplies can be found if you're willing to do some serious legwork. Alternatively, if you're willing to go over the net, we have a near perfect resource for exactly what you want ready at your fingertips!

i dont know exactly how much i need but in the morning im going to cut the air tank up and get its inside dimensions. thanks

try your local pottery supply store. they usually have some kind of refractory blanket as well as satanite or something similar. if they have to order it you can do so cheaper than they can.
