since i got stuck here this weekend instead of going on my survival kit test trip, i decided to do something worthwhile instead of staring at the forums all day...
i'm building a hook knife with some very basic tools and thought i would share with this crowd, since it seems like this area has the most backyard bladesmiths that might appreciate or learn something from this...
my goal with this blade is to not use any power tools except for my bench grinder...so far i have already cheated and use a dremel with a sanding drum for one part...
anyways, here is the large file i started with. i annealed it in a big fire a while ago, and started to try to forge it, but gave up since i really didn't have a good setup at all.
i took it to the bench grinder to shape it to a point and start to remove the teeth on the flat sides.
i used a file to smooth everything up and do the final shaping. i used a combo of file/dremel with sanding drum to flatten out the teeth, then i polished that side on a huge stone i have...if you don't have a dremel this part can be done entirely with the file, it just takes longer. (thats a 12" ruler in the pic
)
then the hard part, grinding in the bevels. i ended up hollow grinding a bevel onto one side of the blade, so that once it was bent i would push with it (or pull with my left hand). i only used the bench grinder. this part took the longest...
