making a integral

so, maybe this is just a crazy idea... can a guy make an integral buy milling or grinding a hunk of round stock, like A-2 or W-2 drill rod? for those of us that don't or can't forge, seems like a viable option. would the heat treat be the major problem? possibility of cracking or warping too great to do this?

Heath, Yes it can be done that way. Chris Reeve has been doing it for years. I believe that Edmund Davidson also mills his knives. I'm sure lots of other people do too. It is certainly a viable way to make a knife. although, in contrast to forging, it wastes a lot of material. But by all means, use whatever methods are at your disposal to go and make some knives.
