Making a knife from a file - tutorial

First off I would like to thank Stacy for putting together a very good tutorial in such a short amount of time. Good Job !! Not to bust balls or anything, but I do find it funny that people on the forums are so quick to jump on the "buy some 1084" band wagon because you know exactly what you are dealing with ( I agree with this as well ). Again Stacy will usually step up and offer a starter kit like a true gentelman. But when someone asks about making a tomahawk out of a hammer, no one tells them to forget it and buy some 5160 square stock!!!!! I'm not bustin chops, just pointing out a double standard that seems to exist. If you use a file your a hack, if you use a hammer no problem.. OK I'm done complaining.. Thanks again Stacy..

The American made Vaughan brand ball pien hammers are verified to be American made 1080 steel.
No question on how to HT them.

I think you are right with the thought that they want to use a file because they can do it now.

I first tried a file blade too, but only because I don't know where to buy other steel.
I would have loved to be pointed to someone like Aldo.

What did I get?
I first tried the grind and dip- I overheated on grinding and ruined temper.
Then on DIY HT, I got broken and warped blades.

Good steel and outsourced pro HT would have given me much more success and joy at the start.
