It's saturday and I'm looking for a project. Here's a potential build inspired by the esee 6 but smaller, no finger choil, and a bowie. I'm not sure I like the look of the handle. Is there anything you more experienced makers and enthusiasts see that I could improve for looks or function? I figure it never hurts to get a second or tenth opinion. 20220806_103226.jpg

Not a maker, obviously, but the overall size and shape would be just in the sweetspot of what I like :)

I like your blade shape ..... at this point, if I'd buy the knife or not, would depend on the handle. You can much improve over the flat ESEE handle with 3D sculpting, make it fatter i the middle, have some room for thumb in reverse grip, etc.

And I do like fullers, but that's just me :) And it would imply more weight reduction in the tang.

Hope that helps.

Roland.

Thanks for the input! I'm too much of a noob to do fullers. 😆 I would definately be lightening the tang up. As far as sculpting, my g10 is pretty thin for a ton of skulpting but well see. I could glue up liners or something to thicken it up. Since the handle is thinner I'm hoping with some contouring it will be nice.

I’m not a maker, and not a very experienced enthusiast. But I know what I like, and I like this. Both blade and handle are nice shapes, they look great together, and it’s nicely proportioned. If you can get the weight balanced right, you’ll have a very nice piece there.

Do you ever hold your pommel at the back for more leverage when chopping?

Or is this knife solely for knife stuff, no chopping?

Personally, I'd lessen/soften the dramatic drop off at the butt end of the handle on the top/spine side. Just a bit.

You could also double up your g-10 for extra handle thickness if you need to.

The rest looks pretty good to me.

Lookin good! I agree with flaring the pommel a bit fatter for retention, and would suggest possibly bringing that angle on the butt up a little bit if it’s going to be full tang with scales all the way to the butt, that extended point at the end is just going to add unnecessary unusable length to the handle…. Unless a pointed pommel as a pokey bit is your intention with the design.

Fatten that boi up at the pommel, there.

Having your handles get bigger near the tail end helps keep your hand on the knife, and the knife in your hand.
Would you add it at top or bottom. I'm torn because if you add at top it might mess with the handle angle in saber. Is you add at bottom it runs the risk of looking disproportioned and both move balance point rearward.

Yeah the point is for zombies. 😆 I'll see what i can do.

Add it at the bottom. On the "finger" side, not the "palm" side, as it were.

Move the whole pattern right smack up against the top of the stock, and then drop that handle LOW.

While you're at it, add some belly to the blade! C'mon son, this is Magna Cut, the latest, greatest, most high-speed-low drag super steel out there! Use that bar UP!

Thanks for the input. I do want to keep the height about where it is.

I’d make the butt bigger, or you‘ll probably find yourself getting fatigued after awhile, unless you do a scalloped handle, then you could probably just leave it the it is.
Also I would not shorten the handle at all, when you go to swing it your hand will want to tilt back and you’ll want that extra little bit there, otherwise your hand will land on that point and be a hotspot.
On your new rendering, the curve at the butt/back (on the bottom) of the handle looks like it would be pretty uncomfortable in use, I wouldn’t make it that dramatic. Hope that makes sense.
That’s just my thoughts, in the end it’s your knife, you do what you want! 😉

More like this? When you say scalloped you mean like a palm swell in the middle? I've never done one so it could be interesting but i could be talked into giving it a try. If I was doing removable scales that would make it more difficult.20220806_115701.jpg

Here's with the handle length maintained and a little bigger pommel.

If it is mine

Just a suggestion: make what YOU like. If you’re going to sell it at some point, somebody somewhere will like it enough to buy it. If you’re going to keep it for yourself, then who cares what anybody else thinks or wants.

If you ask 100 people what they think you should do, you’re gonna get 100 different answers. Don’t make yourself crazy, make what you think will look good and work well. As I already posted, I think you’ve already got a really nice design. I don’t think there’s a knife ever made that is the epitome of design and functionality. Even the best stuff out there doesn’t fit every hand. Listen to somebody else when you’re making a knife for somebody else. Until then, go with your gut.
