Making a shaft ?

I was wondering how hard it is to make a shaft from a stick if you broke your shaft. I hope mine never breaks but would like to know what I am getting myself into if I ever have to make an improvised shaft. Any tips or pics would be helpful. BTW I have a Cold steel frontier hawk.
