So i have made slip joints with two blades, specifically a half whittler, trapper, and peanut styles. I tried a stockman recently and it was so bad i used each of the springs for two different knives. My problem was getting it where the springs would match along the back of the knife.
So i gave it some more thought, and my idea is to completely do the double ended spring and two blades, fully ground and heat treated. Then I'll start the single spring for the master blade and try to get it to match the other spring. To get them to match, ill take the blade off the double spring at the end where the master blade pivots, but keep the other blade on and tight against the spring, and then I'll try to get the single spring sanded down to where it matches the curve of the double spring. There will be a little error, but i can adjust for that when fitting the master blade tang hopefully.
Typically when i make a knife, i totally finish the spring before i even begin on the blade. To fit the blade, i start on the top notch where the blade contacts the spring when open, then i move to the end of the tang, and then finally the kick and heel, i NEVER work in the reverse order since doing so is trying to hit a moving target.
Is this a sound strategy? Is there a better strategy?
