making a strop

I've got the materials to make a strop, but not sure which side of the leather to glue to the board? Should I glue the shooth side or the rough side, or does it matter?

Personal preference. I glued the rough side down on mine. The smooth side is easier to load with compound and clean when necessary.

Use the smooth side up. The smooth side provides more contact area. The rough side will "swallow" much of any compound. It gets lost is the low spots rendering it unaccessible and wasted.
