I want to make a website, and since most of you have sites, I had some questions. What is the best hosting site? My friend recommends hostdone.com, but I am looking at all options. If I used hostdone, I could have 2 years for about $75. Are there any other sites with similar rates?

Just basically looking for any opinions on this subject.

I personally use godaddy.com, they have a few good tools for putting a site together and IIRC they also have a design service for a fee. My site costs about $45 a year but I do all my own stuff (it is a wordpress blog, not a eCommerce site). If you are looking to sell online, look at getting someone to design a site for you. Nothing turns me off like a hokey website.

Back when I was involved in a few websites, I used 1and1.com for hosting, and they provided a free domain. It was pretty cheap if I remember correctly, something like $5/month.

a friend that is a pro developer recommends Lunar Pages. somewhere around $10 a month. he says they're ultra reliable.

I use Webquebec but it is in French only. Cost about 120$ per year. I know I could find cheaper out there but the service I have been getting for the past 10 years makes it worthwhile.

check out webs.com, it is a free web hosting with simple do it yourself tools, and you can upgrade to a paid site with your own domain name. Dale

I recommend Atlanta Virtual....Alex Whetsell is the owner, and has a niche in hosting knife type websites. He is also the owner of Knifekits.com. Their package includes a website building tool that is easy to learn and with it you can have a basic website up and running quickly.

Be wary of those "bargain basement" web hosting services. In my experience, with most of them you become nothing more than a number on an account, and getting help with issues is like finding hen's teeth. Early on I went through three different web hosts, trying to find a bargain.....I dropped each one within the first 30 days because I either could never talk to a real person, or they were never any help in solving my issues,

When I got to Atlanta Virtual, I found someone who understands the needs of knifemakers, and the fact that most of us are much better at building knives than we are at building/maintaining websites. Check them out, you won't be disappointed.

I've been with Alex for several years now, and any time I've ever had an issue (its usually been me not understanding something), its been resovled within a day. At one time there was a weeks outage, that was the fault of some big server on the east coast crashing, and even though it wasn't Atlanta Virtual's fault, Alex offered a years worth of FREE web hosting for the trouble. Trust me, none of the others would do that.

I run the NC Custom Knifemaker's Guild website and we use AV. We've had pretty decent luck with them.

My personal website is hosted on Dreamhost and I a quite happy with my service there also. It is cheaper and you don't get top-rate support, so it's a trade-off between expense and service.

My few experiences with AV support have lead me to believe it was all outsourced. I never had any real trouble with them other than the outage mentioned by Ed, and I do wish that there was better communication during that time. Alex did offer us a free year of hosting also, which I thought was quite a nice gesture, but I'd have taken better communication over free service.

I like Netfirms.com because they seem to be reliable.

For about $10.00 per year you register your own domain name and get a decent amount of free page space and email address but your page will have some advertising at the top unless you pay for the upgraded business packages.
