Making a ZT0566 Flip Like A Champ!

If that does not work try sending it back to KAI they are great people to deal with and I have nothing bad to say about the people that work there or their warranty service I'm just really steamed about 3 out of my 4 ZT knives I got 5 months apart from one another are not working the way they should and the second ZT0566 is the one that has me mad the most and it's not so much because it does not work the way it should it's the fact that the blade will not even try to flip open at all.

I have found with all my knives, that you can adjust the tension on the pivot screw, the best way for me is opening the knife and placing a wooden wedge ( see photo) between the frame lock and the opposite frame enough so you take any pressure off the blade. Now you can adjust the pivot so the blade will fall by itself without any side play at all.
Remove the wedge and try opening the knife again. If there is still an issue it's not likely from the pivot area. With my 0566 adjusted this way there was still to much pressure applied to opening the knife with the flipper. At that point I made an adjustment to the torsion spring. I don't recommend this unless you have the experience to do so. It now opens with lightning speed and no extreme pressure using the flipper. On mine the torsion bar was pre-loaded to much. It had still opened after adjusting the pivot but made my finger quite sore doing it a few times until the torsion bar was adjusted.
Best of luck with yours.
Ron

Monkey Edge has the hinderer teflon washers as of 10:00 am EST, Feb 20. They have a much larger pivot hole and outside diameter. Didn't improve the performance of my ZT0566 at all. Swapping pocket clip to tip up carry seemed to take some pressure off the frame lock and improve things just a little. Hope this helps and your feedback is appreciated. Wade7575 is waiting for his to be returned from Kai and I can't wait to hear if they were able to correct the problem. Hope so. Ron R

Tip up carry puts pressure on the frame lock making it more difficult to open unless the clip has a space between it and the lock. Tip down the clip is not in contact with the frame lock. A slight adjustment can fix this problem with the clip pressure. How tight you grip and your finger location ( off the lock ) also changes the opening.

You are quite right on the position of the pocket clip. I think in the tip up position I have a better grip and therefore don't squeeze the handle as much. To your point, it should be in tip down position. With the g10 handle removed allowing me to close the blade completely and see the position of the spring. I have it installed through the blade normally and the other side with the curl extends a good 3/16 inch out of the milled pocket. From that curl I am thinking that you most likely made your modification by shortening that measured overlap by bending the spring slightly between the rear curl and the next bend. Does that sound about right? Ron r

Tip up or down does not matter to me as long as the clip is not applying pressure on the lock bar. I believe what you are saying is correct in the adjustment I made. In the closed position the end of the spring is the pressure applied to the flipper to get the motion started. When I saw the spring position in the open position there was room to the left for the spring to travel without any pressure on the spring. I bent the spring at the bottom ever so slightly to remove some of the force being applied in the close position. This improved the opening for me with this knife. Before I bent the spring I traced it on a piece of cardboard so that I could return to the original shape if it did not improve the action. It made quite a difference and the blade flies open without undue pressure on the flipper.
I hope this is a bit clearer.

I've seen this issue a few times, and after owning the 0550 and 0561 for some time, seeing friends attempt to open and work the learning curve, I feel like many people are gripping too hard and the frame is binding the blade. My opinion, try flipping with a loose grip maybe that will help?
