Hi Guys,

How do you make an S-gurad form Nickel Silver? The reason I ask is when I applied heat it broke, much as cast iron would do. So, did I heat it too much, or do you simply cold forge it? I had limited success hammering it cold, but there must be a better way. Thanks for any advice.

Thanks, Dave

Anneal and bend repeatedly, little by little until you get what you want. Just a red heat, and air cool. You can get a jump on the S guard by grinding some taper in thickness top side of the upper arm, then bottom side of the lower. This will make the bends look more than they really are. Some grades will allow hot bending, and some won't. Safer to anneal and cold work. In my experience. Not nickel, but shaped as suggested.

Work it cold, annealing it very frequently.

This is how I anneal Nickel Silver. You heat it till it starts to glow a reddish color and quench in water then do your cold forging a little and repeat the proses.

You can work mokume the same way. Brass can also be worked this way, since nickelsilver is a type of brass.

I'm not sure about all the non-ferrous metals, but silver is also forged in the same way.

A less elegant approach but one I've used occasionally is pure stock removal. Just carve out the piece as required. This works well for those of us who are hammer-challenged. ;)
