Hi everyone,

I think I'm going to try to forge a hardy tool to use for forging socket chisels.

It will more or less be a piece of round stock brought to a point and bent over so it is horizontal and in line with the anvil face. I guess it is like a punch that is about 1" in diameter and tapers to a point.

My questions are: what kind of steel do you think would work the best? How hard? How hot for temper??

Thanks everyone. In the mean time I will try to find a picture of this.

i've made alot of hardy tools from those large coil springs... you get in the salvage yards... i believe they may have come off of trains.. ?

anyhow.. i've some anvil bicks that are mild steel.. ( just go real easy on them ) but for heavier work i use the coil ones with a soft spring temper on the workface..

i use them mostly for shaping.... all the heavy work is done elsewhere ..... just make sure the fit of the square shank in the hardy is decent... or it will annoy you for years to come... ;)
