Making my first folder(s) Comments wanted.

Or we could just sell our copies of the book and make a healthy profit:p

In reality they should do a reprint of it, with the prices so high for it, it would be worth their while and they would make out like bandits selling the reprints for 50-60 bucks

Okay, so I have a distribution center of Uddeholm a stones throw away.

Anyone work with BOHLER M390 MICROCLEAN. Here is what their site reads.

BOHLER M390 MICROCLEAN
Third generation powder metal technology. Developed for knife blades requiring good corrosion resistance and very high hardness for excellent wear resistance. Chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and tungsten are added for excellent sharpness and edge retention. Can be polished to an extremely high finish. Hardens and tempers to 60-62 HRC.

I use .050 6AL4V fo folders with blades over 2 1/2" long. I also suggest using it for both liners. Sure you can use something else on the other side, but why. Buy a piece big enough. It won't be that expensive at Alpha Knife Supply. Frank

I bought this book this year, think it cost me $35/shipped CND from chapters.ca, but they are sold out now. I just did a search and the cheapest I could find it was $114 USD. I am glad I got mine when I did, and I read it a couple of times every few months so its not for sale yet, but with these prices I just may be tempted:eek:

Hang on to it for the long haul, if you want the slip joint book someday, you might be able to do an even trade...
it's running $200 ish.. When I wanted one, there was only one available and I paid out the nose...

There are several stainless types you can use but must be heat treated . I believe 416 is one.Titanium you must already know does not. It sure can save a lot of playing around until you know your way with doing springs. Frank

I figure I'll do a WIP since some of you had commented on not seeing some of the methods I'd use to make a knife.

Mods, should I continue in this thread or make a new one?

I'd recommend buying a couple cheap $5 knives and tearing them apart. Some people learn by reading, some have to learn by actually looking at one. I'm not saying to copy it, but having a model to look at can be very helpful.

e-mail sent.

Here is my sketch.

And here is a video of my model showing everything but the liner locker.

Thanks for the offer Zaph. I'll be making around 6 of these so a larger section is needed.

Okay guys my liner locking folder is coming into reality. I have a quick question for you folder makers.

What washer/spacer type do you use around the blade pivot point?

Carl.
I use either 1/8 or 3/16 pivots with .0015 phosphor-bronze washers.
Not to offend but that is a very wide (knife) folder as I see it. Perhaps you have a very large hand? Maybe you might try taking 1/4" or so off of the wideth? The stlye looks okay but the wideth seems unusual. RESPECTFULLY Frank

I have been feeling like it is a bit big. Thanks for the tip. 1/4" off both the blade and handle?

Was that a thou and a half for the phosphor bronze, and not .015? Just checking to be sure.

I really appreciate all the help. As for your initial post in this thread, I have found out what you meant. Thanks for being candid.

Hi.
Yes Carl the blade and the handle. This more easily done by taking some off the top and the bottom rather than just one. You will more likely maintain blade positioning in the frame. You can then perhaps do a wood handle only and rough to size to get what I call a "cheap" feel of it. Yes Carl that should have been .015 !!! I have made every mistake possible at least three or four times. I started on the folders long before I knew there were or if there were sites to get some help. I still reach out of course. and it is amazing where good answers will come from in that they can come at times from very inexperienced people . Frank

And here you go. You certainly could stay with a larger blade and get even more of that "tactical" look. Frank

It's all in the learning curve, Carl. My present day attitude would be to stop and start over, but I have an unfinished Green River style skinner in a cupboard that tells me I didn't way back when and I made a lot in that size. It still comes down to what YOU want to do. Frank

My Liners came out, so I put em together for a quick fit check. They seem okay, on the large side, but okay. I figure I am this far, (Blade is hard already) if it is too big when I am done, it can go in the fond memory box.
