Making My first knife!

For a necker, a thin stainless steel is best. I would recommend either CPM-S35VN or AEB-L. AEB-L is super easy to file and sand, and makes a screaming sharp knife.

If you post your drawings and get them refined ( if needed), I will be glad to cut your profile in either of these steels and send it to you to help get you started.

The place many of us get our blade steel is in your back yard....Aldo's business is New Jersey Steel Baron. He only sells knife steel.

 One more reason why I'm here. Kudos Stacy for helping out!

anyone got any feed back for my designs? positive or negative, all feed back is appreciated

The necker looks fine, and can be done by a novice with hand tools and basic machines. The fantasy blade would be very difficult for a beginner and require serious equipment, skills, and experience. save that for your 50th knife.

Only thought on the necker is that it looks a bit "fat". Try re-drawing it as a slightly thinner blade to see if you like it better that way.

Secondary comment on making a necker is that you will need to make or have made a Kydex neck sheath.

I agree with Stacy. The second is very ambitious for a first, second, 10th... Necker looks good but the bevel may be a little tricky to keep it looking crisp. Go for it!

ok sounds good to me

It will happen for you if you keep your energy level high and the time to do it as long as may be needed.

Well, it is a sharpened block of steel. Sort of. There is no real bevel to the blade and how will you heat treat such a large blade? What will you use for handle materials?
Honestly, I would have taken Stacy up on his very kind offer to cut out the neck knife.
I hope it turns out well. I didn't listen very well on my first knife either.

well im far from finished. did the bevel, that im still working on, with a 1x30 with no jig or anything. i just went at it, just having fun. i want the handle to be metal, id like the knife to be all one piece as i stated earlier. i will just round it off and make the end more "handle like"

Also Stacy was very generous but its a project i want to tackle all on my own. in the end i wouldn't feel satisfied if someone helped me out to that extent. plus i didnt get the steel for my neck knife until yesterday, so i will start that one later.

i was told that nothing beats experience. my first knife doesn't have to be amazing. i just wanted it to be what i wanted it to be and so far im very proud of how much its looking like it did in my head the day i said i wanted to make it. i still have a while to go seeing as how i only work on it for an hour a day but id like to think im at least progressing.

Oh! my buddie has a forge setup in his back yard ;) hope he lets me use his heat treating setup.
