Making my first real knife, in progress (lots of photos).

Very impressive!

well I love threads like these and its cool to see the process someone else takes when making a knife.

Looks like you did / are doing a very nice job for your first knife.

But after all you learned on this one? You will probably make another one and then another and then ..... well you get the picture......:p:D

Look forward to seeing the finished knife, thanks for showing. -

I finally finished the knife. It took way longer than I had anticipated. A quick recap of the specs: O1 steel blade/spacer/lockbar, bocote scales, brass liners/hardware. Some pics:

The final knife. It was hard to take pictures because of the shininess. The bocote scales look pretty nice.

The blade is 3 1/16" long.

It fits well into my hand.

The rear spacer/bolster is also O1 steel sandwiched between the brass liners.

The texture of the blade looks pretty neat. It also hides blemishes well.

Beautiful!!! I love it. Very nice job. I really like that you used a thumb stud to make a one hand opener. The Makers Mark is awesome and I love the blade finish. Those scales look awesome too.
Very nice knife.

Oh, forgot to ask.
How is the centering and lock up? Does it have any blade play at all?
Also, how is that steel with the heat treat holding an edge so far?

Do you plan to make more?

WOW! nice job sir. How do you like the O1 steel?

The O1 seems to sharpen well. I haven't used it enough to test edge retention yet, but hopefully it'll be okay. It's new and shiny enough that I'm scared to EDC it, but maybe I'll carry it around on special occasions.

The centering is poor, unfortunately. I somehow screwed up the drilling so the blade cants to one side when closed... I'll do a better job clamping and drilling the scales/liners on the next one (the way I did it was sloppy for this knife). The thumb stud is also a little too close to the pivot so it's somewhat stiff when opening one-handed. I learned all sorts of little things while building this that I can hopefully apply on future knives.

The good news is the locking is really great, zero play in any direction.
