Making My Very First Knife; An Ulu Knife. (Story and Photos)

Thanks Barry!!! It's really a special bond between people and their pets. I love the paw print. I love the Ulu's. What are you thinking for the 3rd knife?

I believe that my third knife is going to be a hybrid between an Ulu and a conventional kitchen / chef's knife. If I were to sell a knife design, I have a very specific niche market that I would be purposely targeting. I just need to flesh out my idea first with some working prototypes. If this is a success, I have two more ideas to go along with this specific knife that would complete a "set of knives" for specific use. I will keep you posted!

Very nice job ! The only problem I have is that the edge curve on the first ulu ends in a hook that might be a safety hazard .Second ulu avoids that. Now you have to learn all the techniques , filleting fish, sknning animals and scraping the hides, chopping veggies , etc !!
Congrats on the Ham thing ! AC2RC

Very cool tag along as you dive into the world of blade making. :)

I LOVE that you included Reuben. :)

Some folks don't get why I include my two boyz in so many of my videos and WIP threads... It's simple, they hold a huge place in my heart, and I know that ten years from now if I looked back and hadn't included them... I'd regret it.

Thank you for sharing. :)

Hi Mete,
Since making Ulu #2, it is the ONLY knife that I have used in my kitchen! Whether I am slicing mushroom, carrots, tomatoes, or anything else, I have only been using Ulu #2, and I like it! I am not a hunter, so I won't be skinning animals, nor am I a "meat eater". I have chosen a largely vegan diet to sustain my dietary needs.

I DO need to get back to my website and post an article on how I made my slimjim antenna. I made it several months ago and took plenty of photographs to document how I did it. I am very new to the Ham radio world and I really don't practice as much as I should. The radio that I use is a Baofeng UV-82X handheld. I made and hung a slimjim up in a tree next to my house and brought the cable inside my living space. I put a BNC connector on top of the radio antenna port and a matching BNC connector on the coax cable. I also have an aftermarket "rubber duck" antenna that also has a BNC connector on the end of that. So..... I can swap back and forth between the slimjim and duck antennas pretty easily.

Black Lab, that is beautiful work. The only qualm I have about it is the two sharp points turning up at the ends. The ulus I've seen and used don't have them, and it seems to me to be a needless hazard. Why not just cut it straight across? (edit to add: as I see you did with your second ulu) I get a bit queasy thinking of my hand slipping while chopping something...

I do love the work though. Keep on trucking ;)
